Russian wheelchair fencers win 3 medals at World Cup stage in Thailand

From August 30 to September 2, a World Cup stage in wheelchair fencing was held in Pattaya, Thailand.

The competition was attended by athletes from 12 countries, including 18 wheelchair fencers from Russia, who competed in individual events in foil, épée, and sabre.

As a result of the competition, Russian athletes won 3 bronze medals.

Timur Khamatshin (Republic of Bashkortostan) took third place in the sabre event in category B.

Victoria Boykova (Moscow) became a bronze medalist in épée in category B.

Artur Yusupov (Novosibirsk Region) won a bronze medal in foil in category A.

Wheelchair fencing is a Paralympic sport. It was included in the program of the 1st Summer Paralympic Games in 1960 in Rome, Italy. Men and women with amputations, spinal cord injuries, and cerebral palsy participate in the competitions. Athletes fence while seated in fixed wheelchairs at arm's length, using weapons (foil, sabre, or épée). A touch to the valid surface scores a point, and hits are registered using electronic equipment. Unlike foil and sabre, in épée bouts all touches are counted. Officiating in Paralympic fencing follows the rules of the International Fencing Federation.
