Russian para-canoeists win 5 medals at European Championships in Portugal

From June 7 to 15, the European Canoe Sprint and Paracanoe Championships took place in Montemor-o-Velho, Portugal.

As a result of the competition, Russian athletes won 5 medals: 2 gold, 1 silver, and 2 bronze.

Alexandra Dupik became a two-time champion: in the women's KL1 class with a time of 59.058 seconds, and in the women's VL1 class with a time of 1 minute 05.371 seconds.

Artur Chuprov won a silver medal in the VL1 class with a time of 1 minute 01.906 seconds.

Bronze medalists included Roman Serebryakov in the men's VL2 class with a time of 52.987 seconds, and Ekaterina Statsenko in the women's VL2 class — she posted a time of 1 minute 04.515 seconds.

A total of 11 para-canoeists from Russia took part in the competition: Paralympic silver medalist and multiple World Championship medalist Leonid Krylov (Moscow – Primorsky Krai, KL3 class); Paralympic bronze medalist, world champion and multiple World Championship medalist Larisa Volik (Krasnodar Krai, VL3); multiple world champion Artur Chuprov (Krasnodar Krai, VL1); World Championship medalists Nadezhda Andreeva (Saint Petersburg, KL2 / VL3), Pavel Gromov (Krasnodar Krai, KL1), Alexandra Dupik (Krasnodar Krai, KL1 / VL1); Igor Korobeinikov (Moscow, VL2); World Cup medalist Roman Serebryakov (Nizhny Novgorod Oblast, VL2); as well as national champions and medalists Alexander Ilyichev (Nizhny Novgorod Oblast, KL1), Zakhar Nazarenko (Krasnodar Krai, VL3), and Ekaterina Statsenko (Volgograd Oblast, VL2). They competed in 200-meter heats.

Canoe sprint is a Paralympic sport and was included in the program of the 2016 Summer Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil). Competitions are held in individual heats for men and women in kayak (KL) and canoe (VL) across three functional classes: L1, L2, and L3. At the 2009 Canoe Sprint World Championships in Halifax (Canada), heats for athletes with physical impairments were held for the first time, drawing strong support from spectators and the sporting community. At the 2020 Summer Paralympics in Tokyo (Japan), Leonid Krylov won a silver medal in the kayak KL3 class.
