Rowing for athletes with physical impairments was first included in the program of the XIII Summer Paralympic Games in Beijing in 2008. Both men and women compete in the sport. Races are held in four boat classes over a distance of 2,000 meters. Para-rowing boats – men's or women's single sculls – may be equipped with special pontoons that act as stabilizers to ensure balance.
