Paracanoe is a Paralympic sport that was introduced into the program of the XV Summer Paralympic Games in 2016 in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil). Competitions are held in single events for men and women in kayak (KL) and canoe (VL) across three functional classes: L1, L2, and L3. At the 2009 Canoe Sprint World Championships in Halifax (Canada), races for athletes with physical impairments were held for the first time, drawing strong support from spectators and the sports community. At the XVI Summer Paralympic Games in Tokyo (Japan), Leonid Krylov won a silver medal in kayak in the KL3 class.
