TASS: RPC approved Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1 as a Anthem at Paralympic Games

30 March 2021

MOSCOW, March 30. / TASS / The Paralympic Committee of Russia (the RPC) approved at a meeting of the Governing Board the Piano Concerto No. 1 of Pyotr Tchaikovsky as an alternative to the Russian anthem at the Paralympic Games. TASS was informed about this by the interim RPC President Pavel Rozhkov.

"Today, members of the Governing Board approved a composition that will become an alternative to the national anthem for Russian athletes at the Paralympic Summer and Winter Games and World Championships," Rozhkov said. "In the near future, we will send this musical composition to the International Paralympic Committee for approval."

Due to the two-year sanctions of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), Russian athletes cannot compete under the national flag and using the national anthem at the World Championships, Olympic and Paralympic Games. Earlier, the Russian Olympic Committee sent a proposal to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to use Tchaikovsky's as anthem at the Olympic Games. Prior to this, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) did not allow the use of the song "Katyusha" instead of the anthem.
