SAINT-PETERSBURG, June 17. /TASS/. The mechanisms of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) have discredited themselves. Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Chernyshenko expressed this opinion on Friday, speaking at the discussion panel "Sport without barriers: new scenarios and formats" at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum.
"Regarding the pivot to the East, to the countries friendly to us," Chernyshenko said. - We need to strengthen our sovereignty, to be open. We need new formats of cooperation, we need to be open to friendly countries. The IOC and IPC mechanisms have discredited themselves; I do not know how they can clear themselves and make the competition system fair again. We are very happy to have colleagues from China here. There is the East, Africa, SCO, BRICS, good friends from the CIS, we have a lot of competitions planned."
On February 28, the IOC recommended international sports federations not to allow Russian and Belarusian athletes to participate in international competitions because of the situation in Ukraine. Many sports federations agreed with the recommendation, and Russia was also deprived of the right to host a number of tournaments in various sports.
The IPC announced that the Russian team was not allowed to participate in the Paralympics in Beijing, when the Russian team was already in China and waiting for the first starts. However, 17 hours before the final decision, the IPC announced that the national team had been fully admitted to the Games.
