RUSSIAN SLEDGE HOCKEY TEAM WON FIRST TWO MATCHES AT THE INTERNATIONAL PARA HOCKEY CUP TOURNAMENT

15 December 2021
From December, 9 till December, 20th the International Para Hockey Cup international tournament takes place in Ostrava (Czech Republic).

The national teams of Russia and Czech Republic are taking part in the tournament. The International Para Hockey Cup is an important part of the preparation of both teams for the Paralympic Games in Beijing.

Initially, the participation of 4 teams was planned in the tournament. Shortly before the start of the competition, Team USA and Team Canada withdrew.

On December, 12 and 13 the first matches between the two teams were held. Both times Russian athletes won.

The first match ended with a score of 4:0. The game was very smooth and measured, both teams knowing that it was only the start and there were four more games ahead as if saving their strength. Nevertheless, most of the action with the puck occurred in the Czech zone, so the result was quite predictable. This was not the first year the Russians have played with the Czechs, so they do not fall for such tricks of the opponent, as sluggish resistance at the beginning of the tournament.

In the second match the Czech team lost to the Russian team with a score of 1:8. Dmitry Galkin (Udmurtia) opened the scoring, and the Russian team finished the first period with one point. Russian hockey players scored most of all in the second period. Konstantin Shikhov ("Ugra") and Evgeny Petrov ("Phoenix") scored two goals each. After that the Russians went to halftime with a comfortable 5:0 advantage.

The third period the Russians started with another goal scored by Ivan Kuznetsov ("Phoenix"), and then Shihov scored his hat-trick to bring the total score to 7:0. The goal to our team was scored by the youngest player of the Czech team, sixteen-year old Filip Vesely.

However the joy of the home team was short-lived, as Vladimir Rychkov (Udmurtia) gave the final score of the second match - 8:1 in favor of Russia.

Ahead the Russian hockey players will have three more matches against the Czech national team.
