PAVEL ROZHKOV IN BREST FORTRESS PARTICIPATED IN THE OPENING CEREMONY OF THE OPEN PARA SWIMMING CUP OF THE REPUBLIC OF BELARUS
06 July 2022
The opening ceremony of the Open Para Swimming Cup of the Republic of Belarus took place in Brest Fortress on 6 July.
Pavel Rozhkov, President of the Russian Paralympic Committee, Oleg Shepel, Chairman of the Paralympic Committee of the Republic of Belarus, Andrey Kalina, six-time champion in swimming, Victoria Ishchyulova, Paralympic champion, and other distinguished guests participated in the ceremony.
Pavel Rozhkov in his speech noted:
"On behalf of the Russian Paralympic Committee I am pleased to welcome the participants, organizers and guests to the Open Para Swimming Cup of the Republic of Belarus.
I would like to thank the National Paralympic Committee of the Republic of Belarus for the invitation to take part in this sports event.
It is very symbolic that the opening ceremony of the competition takes place in one of the iconic places of Belarus - the Brest Fortress. It is known throughout the world that it was the first to take the blow of the enemy on June 22, 1941 and broke the plans of blitzkrieg. Defense of the Brest Fortress - an example of heroism, courage and resilience of the Soviet people in the fight for freedom and independence of the motherland from fascism. And it is a great honor for us to be here.
Fascism and Nazism are an evil that we will never put up with. Our fathers, grandfathers and great grandfathers crushed Nazism on the battlefield at the cost of their lives. We honour their memory sacredly.
Sport, unfortunately, was also subject to sanctioning pressure from the Western countries. But this will not break us.
May these competitions be a true celebration of sports. May an atmosphere of mutual understanding and friendship prevail everywhere.
I wish you success, prosperity and sporting good luck!
The Open Para Swimming Cup of the Republic of Belarus will be held from July 5 to 10 at the Brest Regional Center of the Olympic Reserve in water sports. Athletes with physical and visual impairments take part in the competition.
About 130 swimmers from Belarus, Russia and Donetsk are fighting for the medals.
Russia is represented by 94 athletes, 65 of them - with physical impairments and 29 - with visual impairments. There are 16 champions of Tokyo Paralympic Games in the team.
