PARATRIATLON WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP 2021 POSTPONED FOR THE PERIOD AFTER THE END OF THE PARALYMPIC GAMES IN TOKYO
The World Triathlon Federation (World Triathlon) has sent an information letter on the latest changes to the competition calendar for 2021, as well as information on qualifications for the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Tokyo.
Paralympic qualification rankings will resume from May 1, 2021 and will last until July 15.
The renewal of the Paralympic Qualification Period means that Athletes will have the opportunity to compete in the following events to score points for their individual Paralympic Qualifying Ranking:
1. World Paralympic Triathlon Series 2021 in Yokohama (Japan) - May 15-16;
2. World Paralympic Triathlon Series 2021 in Leeds (UK) - June 5-6;
3. Para Triathlon World Cup 2021 in Besançon (France) - June 12-13;
4. Para Triathlon World Cup 2021 in La Coruna (Spain) - June 20.
2021 Para Triathlon World Cup in Milan has been postponed due to increased restrictions related to the spread of coronavirus infection in Italy. The World Triathlon Federation, together with the Italian Triathlon Federation, are working on the issue of new dates for the championship after the Paralympic Games in Tokyo.
Missed Continental Championships can only be counted if they take place before the end of the Paralympic qualifying period.
The Asian Championships, which is slated for April 23-25, will award points to Asian athletes by exception, although it will take place before the start of the qualifying period.
The Continental Championships, which are currently scheduled for the qualifying period, will take place in Africa in Sharm El Sheikh. If any Continental Championships are not held by July 15th, there will be no retroactive scoring for events prior to the original Paralympic qualification period.
In parallel with the reopening of the Paralympic Qualification, the World Para Triathlon Ranking will be reopened. All competitions will count towards the ranking according to the existing criteria. The only events that can be added to this renewed ranking will be all the 2021 Continental Championships, which can be held before May 1st.
In the event that the number of Continental Championships, World Series and World Cups is less than 4 prior to the resumption of the qualifying period, the World Triathlon Federation Executive Committee may revise the status of the Paralympic qualifying events for the remaining events. Once the qualifying period begins, the qualifying competition will count, regardless of the number of competitions in that period.
