Championship.com: Russian Sports Minister Degtyarev Discusses the Progress of the ROC’s Reinstatement in Discussions with the IOC

04 June 2026

Russian Minister of Sport and President of the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) Mikhail Degtyarev spoke about the progress of the process to restore the organization’s rights in discussions with the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

— How are preparations for the Olympics going in terms of our athletes’ reinstatement?

— We have carried out a management reform for summer sports. It is complete. We are fully compliant with international standards. What we have done legally: on March 31, 2025, we approved a program for each sport. There are 42 sports in total at the Olympics. The IOC will present the first drafts.

Qualifying competitions for 22 sports are set to begin by the end of the year. Our only issue is with team sport qualifications. We are in communication with the IOC and await positive decisions. Legally, we are ready. The IOC has stated that progress has been made in communication with the ROC.

I’ll give the example of the Paralympic Committee: all processes there have been completed. Its rights have been restored. The Russian anthem has been played 144 times at international competitions since the beginning of the year, — reports Ilya Nikulnikov, a correspondent for “Championship,” quoting Degtyarev.
